My Path to the University of Illinois I thought it might be fun to share with you how I came to be a student here at the University of Illinois. When I graduated from high school back in 2002, I decided to start a punk rock band and pursue a career as a musician. It was a serious endeavor and a risky decision, but I wanted to chase my dream. In 2004, after a couple years of playing shows all over the Midwest and building a regional fanbase, my band signed a recording contract. Thats when things really picked up. I went from having grand aspirations to having a legitimate profession. It was unbelievable to see my bands pictures in magazines and have my bands music videos on television! From a 2010 issue of Alternative Press Magazine. Throughout all my years of touring, I was fortunate enough to be able to travel all over North America and have some pretty remarkable experiences. I was able to open up for some of the biggest names in 2000s alternative rock. I was fortunate enough to meet and play with many of the artists who had been such a big influence on me. I was also able to perform at some of the best college campuses in the United States, including the University of Illinois. Being able to visit and experience life at university campuses across the country would pay off for me when it came time to apply to schools I would be interested in attending later. I snapped this photo from behind my drums in an attempt to get a picture of the crowd. This was at The Bamboozle music festival at Giants Stadium in New Jersey (2007). My band continued to tour and release four full-length albums and a few EPs over the next eight years. Eventually, things slowed down, and music became less and less a part of my life. I thought about my life as well as my goals, and about the experiences I had as an artist in the music business and how those experiences could apply to what I might be interested in pursuing as a new career. My experiences managing my bands social media accounts and working with AR representatives on the promotion of musical instrument products inspired my decision to pursue a career in advertising. I started off at my local community college, and then I applied to a handful of schools I was interested in attending. Given that I am a lifelong resident of the state of Illinois and was very familiar with Champaign-Urbana, the University of Illinois was high on my list. There were many factors that affected my transfer decision: affordability, return on investment, academic reputation, alumni network, and a place I could feel at home were only a few of the criteria I had on my list when making my college decision. The University of Illinois was the perfect match as it checked off every box for me. Champaign-Urbana has always been a very special community for me as an artist, and I am so happy to have been able to make it my home as a student. Judges are often left with few options but to take a child out of the home when he or she poses no threat to public safety and may be in need of treatment or services. This decision has lead to more unresponsive results which involve family stress, reduction in the involvement at school, and an increased likelihood of deeply becoming associated with the criminal justice system. Truancy has been proven to to be one of the strongest early signs that the child is advancing for potential delinquency and moreover failure in education. Incarceration is another proven segment of the system that is ineffective, inequitable, and damaging to children and society as a whole.Data also shows that African American youth were six times more likely than White youth to be detained, Latino youth were more than twice as likely, and Native American youth were nearly four times as likely. Nicholas Murray Butler Library (Columbia University) The construction of the building was finished in 1934 but the library opened its doors in 1935. Architect James Gamble Rogers built this library in Neoclassic style. Previously the library was called the South Hall and then renamed into Nicholas Murray Butler Library in order to commemorate the memory of the prior president of the institution in 1946. The main peculiarity of the library is an arcade of columns where names of great philosophers, writers, and thinkers are inscribed. 5. Doheny Library (University of Southern California) Doheny Library is a historic building opened in 1932. This first freestanding library was built in honor of Edward L. Doheny Jr. – the University of Southern California Trustee and Alumnus. Its still one of the university’s most famous and oldest academic buildings on campus. It incorporates numerous collections, including the Asian Library (there are materials in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean languages), Music Library, and Cinematic Arts Library. 6. William R. Perkins Library (Duke University) Opened in 1839, William R. Perkins Library is one of the 9 buildings that belong to the Library System of Duke University. This library can boast of a vast amount of Confederate Imprints (more than 200,000 photos) that include information on urban communities, rural conditions of the Civil War. The library contains documents and books from other libraries like the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library. This collection of documents is often proclaimed as the most unique part of the on-campus list. 7. Thompson Memorial Library (Vassar College) This Library was opened in 1865 and represents the main building of 7 libraries on the premises of the Vassar College. The architecture of this marvelous library catches the eye of observers. Not every library can boast of the Perpendicular Gothic style, which is very special for on-campus libraries.
